Mathathon, Research Writing and WOW Words!

Another great day in second grade everyone! After catching up on our work board jobs, friends shared their research writing in a variety of ways! Niko wrote a fact book, while Aine and Marcus shared their writing on poster-fact maps! The detail in the illustrations was amazing, along with citing evidence in the text (to show your learning) was equally awesome! Very impressive! Other reading groups celebrated their hard work by sharing a readers theater about Lion's Birthday! Deter, Fernando, Ethan, Georgia, and David read us, IN CHARACTER, the story of how Monkey decides to throw Lion a birthday party, even though the other animals are skeptical (and terrified)! In math Ms. Wickline shared our school's Mathathon project. Students may work on some fun extra, grade level math at home provided by St. Jude's Hospital and gather sponsors to donate money for all their hard work. In the end, we give all our donation to St. Jude's and get some extra math practice to boot! The project is totally optional, and I will consider a reprise in math homework for students working on Mathathon booklets and problems! SES has collectively made some significant donations to St. Jude's, and that's a pretty great feeling! If you're interested, have your permission slips in by Thursday (no later than Friday to participate)! In math we worked on some algebra as well, reviewing what the equal sign means and how we can have missing variables in equations! Super cool! We generated more WOW words in writing workshop, and tried to include them in our stories! Marcus even shared his alien story today too! Can't wait to see what happens next Marcus! Another great day! Let's hope the snow goes "easy" on us tomorrow and we enjoy another school day in second grade... just the way we like it!
