So, another last day... for the books! 2014 was truly a special year with so many wonderful students! We learned so much this year...
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nSnNuppgW14/U6sDViIxcPI/AAAAAAAAUyE/-4MmMS9Qeek/s1600/IMG_6243.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-nSnNuppgW14/U6sDViIxcPI/AAAAAAAAUyE/-4MmMS9Qeek/s320/IMG_6243.JPG" /></a>
In reading we compared fiction and nonfiction, historical fiction and realistic fiction! We learned to write like experts, to teach, lab reports, personal narratives with a great hook and compelling, emotional endings! In math... where do I begin?
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yrrUArBmZ4U/U6sDmVgsBmI/AAAAAAAAUyM/RX8qjyPXBgE/s1600/IMG_6083.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yrrUArBmZ4U/U6sDmVgsBmI/AAAAAAAAUyM/RX8qjyPXBgE/s320/IMG_6083.JPG" /></a>
Place value, expanding numbers, fractions, problem solving, time and money problems, measurement... and especially thinking!!! Holding on to numbers in our heads... and working to solve problems using number patterns!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KKrlGKFp-Co/U6sEXMv5PdI/AAAAAAAAUyY/SrkQil8BpqI/s1600/IMG_4687.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KKrlGKFp-Co/U6sEXMv5PdI/AAAAAAAAUyY/SrkQil8BpqI/s320/IMG_4687.JPG" /></a>
We also learned how to persevere through a problem or situation... how to have the stamina required to solve a problem... how to EARN and feel the satisfaction that comes along with thinking and problem solving!! WOW!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uHVFYNxn8aI/U6sEu-TFXBI/AAAAAAAAUyo/73lruG7FrZk/s1600/IMG_4408.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uHVFYNxn8aI/U6sEu-TFXBI/AAAAAAAAUyo/73lruG7FrZk/s320/IMG_4408.JPG" /></a>
Goodbyes didn't come easy today... as we reflected together, many students were happy, though some were feeling ambivalent. Not quite ready to say good bye, and let it all come to an end.
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-96eskHp9dfk/U6sFCmm50wI/AAAAAAAAUyw/nmQ7-0UQ9H0/s1600/IMG_6248.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-96eskHp9dfk/U6sFCmm50wI/AAAAAAAAUyw/nmQ7-0UQ9H0/s320/IMG_6248.JPG" /></a>
Each and every one of these students have worked hard and are prepared for their next chapter... third grade! But have a happy summer first!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xo_g9wIlT_0/U6sFVGlC9mI/AAAAAAAAUy4/Tj0JkxTlzIg/s1600/IMG_6267.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-xo_g9wIlT_0/U6sFVGlC9mI/AAAAAAAAUy4/Tj0JkxTlzIg/s320/IMG_6267.JPG" /></a>
Make sure to include lots of play, and fun, and even some reading and thinking... puzzles and games... into each day! Well done second graders!! So very proud of you all!!

What a day!! Day 176 out of 180 days for this group of 2W friends to be together, and today we celebrated!!!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zWeB1wc80vs/U5-cTQe_d1I/AAAAAAAAUtE/qcRkEOZ3Teg/s1600/IMG_6022.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zWeB1wc80vs/U5-cTQe_d1I/AAAAAAAAUtE/qcRkEOZ3Teg/s320/IMG_6022.JPG" /></a>
Now let me back this up... what are buttons... a button jar?
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LggZWbLCxmA/U5-cZcBDg-I/AAAAAAAAUtM/xX4RdeNo7wc/s1600/IMG_6023.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LggZWbLCxmA/U5-cZcBDg-I/AAAAAAAAUtM/xX4RdeNo7wc/s320/IMG_6023.JPG" /></a>
On day one, we had a button jar where random, unexpected buttons would be awarded based on acts of kindness, caring acts of friendship, friends taking responsibility, or even when a student takes a risk... increases their learning by making a mistake, but persevering until a problem is solved!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HjKrOkoVv2o/U5-cgk281AI/AAAAAAAAUtY/OBiR0tjrVXo/s1600/IMG_6024.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HjKrOkoVv2o/U5-cgk281AI/AAAAAAAAUtY/OBiR0tjrVXo/s320/IMG_6024.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8RZc9ShTo7U/U5-cguJ1wAI/AAAAAAAAUtU/OX00G4UB0rA/s1600/IMG_6025.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8RZc9ShTo7U/U5-cguJ1wAI/AAAAAAAAUtU/OX00G4UB0rA/s320/IMG_6025.JPG" /></a>
Now, that's really learning!! To start this special day of celebrating, students chose activities that they would like to do together... and voted!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-59OxmWCLt0Y/U5-cpdQ0m5I/AAAAAAAAUtk/H_EgYMyXhKo/s1600/IMG_6028.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-59OxmWCLt0Y/U5-cpdQ0m5I/AAAAAAAAUtk/H_EgYMyXhKo/s320/IMG_6028.JPG" /></a>
Winning votes included sponge tag, extra recess, and ice cream sundaes!!! Well done! But, Ms. W had a few surprises, and the first one that started our day was a button treasure hunt!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lUKHWtiM6hU/U5-cy_VzhLI/AAAAAAAAUts/ZBz9elg2MCg/s1600/IMG_6029.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lUKHWtiM6hU/U5-cy_VzhLI/AAAAAAAAUts/ZBz9elg2MCg/s320/IMG_6029.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s14iODh0m6w/U5-czpWiF8I/AAAAAAAAUtw/aMhQ3wTCkSg/s1600/IMG_6030.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-s14iODh0m6w/U5-czpWiF8I/AAAAAAAAUtw/aMhQ3wTCkSg/s320/IMG_6030.JPG" /></a>
Working in teams... reading clues.... hunting for buttons throughout our school, and collecting keepsakes... button style! What an adventure!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j-dFF8fV-8s/U5-c_nNYWhI/AAAAAAAAUt8/GODkSqIyLjU/s1600/IMG_6036.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j-dFF8fV-8s/U5-c_nNYWhI/AAAAAAAAUt8/GODkSqIyLjU/s320/IMG_6036.JPG" /></a>
And what a way to reflect on some of the great times in our second grade year together! Next up, on this beautiful Monday morning... sponge tag!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z26ts9Vv44Y/U5-dKfawNTI/AAAAAAAAUuM/n1jDkw-QUl0/s1600/IMG_6040.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z26ts9Vv44Y/U5-dKfawNTI/AAAAAAAAUuM/n1jDkw-QUl0/s320/IMG_6040.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yxF6s58U0r4/U5-dJF1NERI/AAAAAAAAUuE/Mw8Y8eGinX8/s1600/IMG_6041.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yxF6s58U0r4/U5-dJF1NERI/AAAAAAAAUuE/Mw8Y8eGinX8/s320/IMG_6041.JPG" /></a>
Running in the grass while tagging friends with soggy sponges on a warm sunny day! What fun!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J1t3bHI3qKA/U5-dVVAFAsI/AAAAAAAAUuU/uinSb24eDIE/s1600/IMG_6043.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-J1t3bHI3qKA/U5-dVVAFAsI/AAAAAAAAUuU/uinSb24eDIE/s320/IMG_6043.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5YS0S_FO7YQ/U5-dWV4GXPI/AAAAAAAAUuc/kbAqd3YWO6g/s1600/IMG_6049.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5YS0S_FO7YQ/U5-dWV4GXPI/AAAAAAAAUuc/kbAqd3YWO6g/s320/IMG_6049.JPG" /></a>
After sponge tag, we tried a little "duck, duck sponge"... a lot like duck duck goose... but with a soggy wet, sponge filled with water!! Let the games begin!! Soon after our beautiful morning together hunting for buttons and cooling off with some sponge tag it was time for an afternoon with sundaes!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PZc__ytpRXo/U5-dpJUQA1I/AAAAAAAAUus/YsiW8fCOaeA/s1600/IMG_6055.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PZc__ytpRXo/U5-dpJUQA1I/AAAAAAAAUus/YsiW8fCOaeA/s320/IMG_6055.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2ildwhx4F0o/U5-dn9G4DGI/AAAAAAAAUuk/Jj38G9DRS3I/s1600/IMG_6056.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2ildwhx4F0o/U5-dn9G4DGI/AAAAAAAAUuk/Jj38G9DRS3I/s320/IMG_6056.JPG" /></a>
That's right!! Ice cream sundaes and some favorite toppings provided by all our button party participants!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LP4AVe2DSM8/U5-dy-n6jfI/AAAAAAAAUu0/1c8rzMaPYCY/s1600/IMG_6062.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LP4AVe2DSM8/U5-dy-n6jfI/AAAAAAAAUu0/1c8rzMaPYCY/s320/IMG_6062.JPG" /></a>
What could be better while noshing on ice cream sundaes than watching Mary Poppins! A movie made from a book we just read together at read aloud!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w_Qz84bnKXA/U5-d63N3FpI/AAAAAAAAUu8/h4O2qoAYN7Q/s1600/IMG_6063.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w_Qz84bnKXA/U5-d63N3FpI/AAAAAAAAUu8/h4O2qoAYN7Q/s320/IMG_6063.JPG" /></a>

Greetings Families and Friends! We sure have been busy in writing workshop with our unit on opinion writing... writing to persuade and using evidence to support our thoughts and feelings... our opinions! WOW!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AwppSu3d_pw/U4UQm10f_GI/AAAAAAAAUmk/ahvuP7iyQlc/s1600/IMG_5775.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AwppSu3d_pw/U4UQm10f_GI/AAAAAAAAUmk/ahvuP7iyQlc/s320/IMG_5775.JPG" /></a>
What an important skill to have, and we've been breaking it down, day by day, one writing workshop at a time!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rIdS9mEHrmk/U4UQy91rq3I/AAAAAAAAUm0/-_FqZAy8JxU/s1600/IMG_5776.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rIdS9mEHrmk/U4UQy91rq3I/AAAAAAAAUm0/-_FqZAy8JxU/s320/IMG_5776.JPG" /></a>
Practicing strategies, using linking and transition words, learning important phrases like "for example", and "in my opinion", and even, "as you can see"... Wow!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Hn1lFRvKA0w/U4URJmvFTUI/AAAAAAAAUm8/ggZlKkoagD8/s1600/IMG_5784.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Hn1lFRvKA0w/U4URJmvFTUI/AAAAAAAAUm8/ggZlKkoagD8/s320/IMG_5784.JPG" /></a>
Great job writers! Today, we assembled each of our smaller/classroom community of writers and merged together as a school, under the organization of our very own Sarah Burstein!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eNFNOqhDidE/U4UQtIHIgaI/AAAAAAAAUms/9HuW7DAOk0U/s1600/IMG_5772.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-eNFNOqhDidE/U4UQtIHIgaI/AAAAAAAAUms/9HuW7DAOk0U/s320/IMG_5772.JPG" /></a>
First we joined together in the gym for a slide show of our writing community... every class, every grade, one big community!!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4No3L_yS3JI/U4UROZyGdDI/AAAAAAAAUnE/bqmrsjNaSuA/s1600/IMG_5778.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4No3L_yS3JI/U4UROZyGdDI/AAAAAAAAUnE/bqmrsjNaSuA/s320/IMG_5778.JPG" /></a>
Next, teams were assembled (across the grade levels) and we went on a writing journey of authors sharing!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b_q66VMK8Os/U4URVUBc_4I/AAAAAAAAUnM/Li5BC9O2IGE/s1600/IMG_5787.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-b_q66VMK8Os/U4URVUBc_4I/AAAAAAAAUnM/Li5BC9O2IGE/s320/IMG_5787.JPG" /></a>
A parade of teams went from place to place, while second grade writers shared with PK writers and first grade writers!!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bvTxcf2dVu8/U4URdhzhOXI/AAAAAAAAUnU/2p7K8Vw4V-g/s1600/IMG_5788.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bvTxcf2dVu8/U4URdhzhOXI/AAAAAAAAUnU/2p7K8Vw4V-g/s320/IMG_5788.JPG" /></a>
It was absolutely spectacular! Another outstanding day to reflect on what we've learned as writers, and to see our writing skills on display!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uqj5D7v-0E4/U4URl0YLvgI/AAAAAAAAUnc/VVOB_l_KT0A/s1600/IMG_5791.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uqj5D7v-0E4/U4URl0YLvgI/AAAAAAAAUnc/VVOB_l_KT0A/s320/IMG_5791.JPG" /></a>
Well done second grade.... Well done SES!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cZ-snQJelYA/U4URs-QOrwI/AAAAAAAAUnk/mp1o5RBpBhs/s1600/IMG_5783.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cZ-snQJelYA/U4URs-QOrwI/AAAAAAAAUnk/mp1o5RBpBhs/s320/IMG_5783.JPG" /></a>
Writing matters, and we proved it today!!Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-75197603248296801182014-05-08T09:55:00.000-04:002014-05-08T09:55:16.825-04:00Large and In Charge!! Ms. Carey's Master Teaching!
So much has been going on in 2W... it's about time we got caught up! With Ms. Carey taking over as head teacher in 2W, we've introduced some new units in math, social studies, and writing workshop!!
In math workshop, we've finished our units on time and money, and have practiced composing and decomposing numbers as a strategy for problem solving! We've also learned strategies for double digit addition and subtraction with regrouping and carrying, now we just have to keep practicing so we remember and follow all the steps so that we're working with precision and care! Our new math units have focused on measurement! What are the tools we use, how to measure carefully, precisely, and why measurment is important! Learning about inches, feet, meters, centimeters, yards, as units, and how they work together is especially important! We will continue to practice what we've learned so we can solve measurement problems!
In reading workshop we've added a social studies unit on maps and globes! Learning how to use a compass rose and cardinal direction, scale, and how maps and globes are used are very important!
In writing workshop we celebrated all our hard work in our non-fiction/writing to teach unit with a fantastic second grade author's share! We're moving on in our next writing unit on opinion/persuasion writing! Learning about what an opinion is, how to support opinions with evidence, and writing to persuade is a skill! Our focus in writing workshop will be to practice writing with these new skills we've learned!
As always, every day is full of math and morning meetings, greetings, energizers, songs, and interactive fun learning activities! Ms. Carey will continue her master teaching throughout this week, and then she will remain in our classroom until the end of the year!! How lucky are WE?!?!Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-92023853815567351342014-03-25T18:13:00.000-04:002014-03-25T18:14:46.709-04:00Research and Expanded Number Strategies for Addition!<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G0cboDFtHtc/UzH-YEgrLoI/AAAAAAAAUO8/x6zxDB99dEQ/s1600/IMG_4687.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-G0cboDFtHtc/UzH-YEgrLoI/AAAAAAAAUO8/x6zxDB99dEQ/s320/IMG_4687.JPG" /></a>
Howdy Friends! Things sure have been busy in 2W! Stephanie's been our math meeting helper this week, and has guided us through calendar math, days in school, in money, and today's number!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tVaB4Zp8_Pc/UzH-dsWpD4I/AAAAAAAAUPE/9GfHMyDOYGQ/s1600/IMG_4688.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tVaB4Zp8_Pc/UzH-dsWpD4I/AAAAAAAAUPE/9GfHMyDOYGQ/s320/IMG_4688.JPG" /></a>
Well done Stephanie! In math we've also learned lots of strategies for adding double and triple digit numbers! Our new strategy is to use what we know about expanding numbers! When you expand numbers into hundreds, tens, and ones, you can create a picture of the number in a more concrete way!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YkV98rziQeo/UzH-jmSeWXI/AAAAAAAAUPM/YPXFSWOAwi8/s1600/IMG_4689.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YkV98rziQeo/UzH-jmSeWXI/AAAAAAAAUPM/YPXFSWOAwi8/s320/IMG_4689.JPG" /></a>
Using this strategy, we can then add the hundreds, tens, and ones! Eventually, we will be able to do this in our head... mental math!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O1twz4ZRlwE/UzH-p8k3p-I/AAAAAAAAUPU/DsXi2Z0I_MI/s1600/IMG_4691.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-O1twz4ZRlwE/UzH-p8k3p-I/AAAAAAAAUPU/DsXi2Z0I_MI/s320/IMG_4691.JPG" /></a>
In reading workshop we've taken our nonfiction reading standards, our research writing standards, and combined them into one awesome research project!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-07jDjrCxVF4/UzH-wGczN-I/AAAAAAAAUPc/vXIfcro9ml0/s1600/IMG_4692.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-07jDjrCxVF4/UzH-wGczN-I/AAAAAAAAUPc/vXIfcro9ml0/s320/IMG_4692.JPG" /></a>
Using research and collaboration we are building background knowledge and becoming experts on our topics! The research topics came right out of our district science curriculum: Earth, Moon, and Sun!!

Soon we'll be ready to share all our learning and "expert words" along with creative illustrations with diagrams, labels, and all kind of nonfiction text features! Very exciting time to be learning in second grade! Well done friends!!

If you're wondering how 2W's been going... it's been BUSY!!!! Just the way we like it! Friday was Read Across America Day, and we celebrated with some awesome guest readers!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ooEfEK5tcck/UyDe5caS5pI/AAAAAAAAUCE/d3NptkY9S_k/s1600/IMG_4437.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ooEfEK5tcck/UyDe5caS5pI/AAAAAAAAUCE/d3NptkY9S_k/s320/IMG_4437.JPG" /></a>
Rory, Grant, and Evan, all linebackers and scholars from Amherst College joined us in the morning for some Dr. Seuss fun!! We loved listening to these college boys read some of our favorite Seuss classics!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5aTddEu9m2Q/UyDfJShtXBI/AAAAAAAAUCM/aWPvTMn9e5c/s1600/IMG_4439.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5aTddEu9m2Q/UyDfJShtXBI/AAAAAAAAUCM/aWPvTMn9e5c/s320/IMG_4439.JPG" /></a>
They also shared a little about themselves... what their favorite stories were when they were our age, what it's like to play on a team, and how important reading is in their lives! They also talked about discipline, practice, and hard work... and the rewards that follow!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1WbEJ8gkII0/UyDfO3HdetI/AAAAAAAAUCU/SR2eaJNO0io/s1600/IMG_4440.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1WbEJ8gkII0/UyDfO3HdetI/AAAAAAAAUCU/SR2eaJNO0io/s320/IMG_4440.JPG" /></a>
Each one had a favorite author and a favorite Seuss book as well! Great job and kudos to everyone who made this such a special day!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2feF60BjZAs/UyDfVCYbamI/AAAAAAAAUCc/yPUlJ7Yx_R4/s1600/IMG_4429.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2feF60BjZAs/UyDfVCYbamI/AAAAAAAAUCc/yPUlJ7Yx_R4/s320/IMG_4429.JPG" /></a>
Thing 1 and Thing 2 also made appearances, as did a variety of Seuss inspired characters throughout the day! Thanks to Mrs. Lemeshow and Ms. Kidder for making all the arrangements and coordinating all our guest readers! WE LOVED IT!!!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Uh5rOkzVXR0/UyDfaasRbBI/AAAAAAAAUCk/rcEe1YyCzdU/s1600/IMG_4441.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Uh5rOkzVXR0/UyDfaasRbBI/AAAAAAAAUCk/rcEe1YyCzdU/s320/IMG_4441.JPG" /></a>
While Seuss stole the show... we've also been working on problem solving and equations! Showing our thinking while solving problems is a very important skill!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bE1pnknT92A/UyDfmd85ebI/AAAAAAAAUCs/3EntuN9zoPU/s1600/IMG_4443.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bE1pnknT92A/UyDfmd85ebI/AAAAAAAAUCs/3EntuN9zoPU/s320/IMG_4443.JPG" /></a>
Knowing how to regroup numbers (composing and decomposing numbers), and turning ones into tens is the foundation for all of our problem solving strategies!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BgctPlD-aA8/UyDfu06JdbI/AAAAAAAAUC0/5QG1_jUwhn4/s1600/IMG_4485.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BgctPlD-aA8/UyDfu06JdbI/AAAAAAAAUC0/5QG1_jUwhn4/s320/IMG_4485.JPG" /></a>
We also took a close look at equations and figured out what the missing numbers were. Just like solving a puzzle! In reading workshop we jumped right back into reading groups with some very well deserved fiction and realistic fiction, and we loved it!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oB7deLQXchQ/UyDf36YgIgI/AAAAAAAAUC8/njCiapqQ7ks/s1600/IMG_4501.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oB7deLQXchQ/UyDf36YgIgI/AAAAAAAAUC8/njCiapqQ7ks/s320/IMG_4501.JPG" /></a>
We practiced writing about our reading (the second grade way) with lots of details and using important linking words, which always make our sentences better and full of important information!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vSvYel2pTN4/UyDf_rS3_OI/AAAAAAAAUDE/Q0nHEesprYY/s1600/IMG_4486.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vSvYel2pTN4/UyDf_rS3_OI/AAAAAAAAUDE/Q0nHEesprYY/s320/IMG_4486.JPG" /></a>
Next week... group projects! Reading workshop meets up with Science and second graders working together to research a topic, and report back on their learning! Can't wait! Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-17350555962008315772014-03-04T20:41:00.000-05:002014-03-04T20:41:36.788-05:00Research and Catapults!!<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ij4TgmNxwZM/UxZVzus68EI/AAAAAAAAT-E/CDwsMAv9arc/s1600/IMG_4365.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ij4TgmNxwZM/UxZVzus68EI/AAAAAAAAT-E/CDwsMAv9arc/s320/IMG_4365.JPG" /></a>
While not many things can top the splendor and whimsy of Willy Wonka Day... today was pretty awesome just the same! We started with math and learned how to add double digit numbers together! We had to play close attention to learn what happens when we write our adding the paper and pencil way, while keeping track of every time we "carry" tens into the tens column!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-buI7aOqZ3lo/UxZ-gXsPgVI/AAAAAAAAT-U/o5usNBVyX4A/s1600/IMG_4368.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-buI7aOqZ3lo/UxZ-gXsPgVI/AAAAAAAAT-U/o5usNBVyX4A/s320/IMG_4368.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oq83DfBompA/UxZ-jNfrXCI/AAAAAAAAT-c/HcNoRrHyvoc/s1600/IMG_4371.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oq83DfBompA/UxZ-jNfrXCI/AAAAAAAAT-c/HcNoRrHyvoc/s320/IMG_4371.JPG" /></a>
After some practice, we tried some on our own! The quicker and easier you are with your math facts (fluency) the easier it is to learn and remember how to add and subtract numbers when they get bigger!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AEDon02pzos/UxZ-n2kQFgI/AAAAAAAAT-k/lVrbAjSpL2M/s1600/IMG_4373.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AEDon02pzos/UxZ-n2kQFgI/AAAAAAAAT-k/lVrbAjSpL2M/s320/IMG_4373.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tg9Z3aSiRQU/UxZ-q1WqE1I/AAAAAAAAT-s/j5fdxcC1q0M/s1600/IMG_4377.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Tg9Z3aSiRQU/UxZ-q1WqE1I/AAAAAAAAT-s/j5fdxcC1q0M/s320/IMG_4377.JPG" /></a>
We also celebrated our nonfiction writing unit with our animal research posters! Students read copies of books related to their topic, and became the expert on that animal!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uOqw3eUgOGY/UxZ-xOMP_0I/AAAAAAAAT-0/BOXrqW1y_kk/s1600/IMG_4378.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-uOqw3eUgOGY/UxZ-xOMP_0I/AAAAAAAAT-0/BOXrqW1y_kk/s320/IMG_4378.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nQ8GCeT458M/UxZ-x_RXwjI/AAAAAAAAT-4/SJYX-xwnAmU/s1600/IMG_4380.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nQ8GCeT458M/UxZ-x_RXwjI/AAAAAAAAT-4/SJYX-xwnAmU/s320/IMG_4380.JPG" /></a>
By sharing our learning, everyone learned a lot more about many animals, not just the animal they researched! We learned about extinct animals, wild animals, mammals, birds, reptiles, and MORE!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ET6iggphVLI/UxZ-4qMn_KI/AAAAAAAAT_E/HHDSdiAbG8w/s1600/IMG_4384.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ET6iggphVLI/UxZ-4qMn_KI/AAAAAAAAT_E/HHDSdiAbG8w/s320/IMG_4384.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bq0yViq53Xk/UxZ-5qH_GcI/AAAAAAAAT_I/WcSYSZq7Now/s1600/IMG_4386.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bq0yViq53Xk/UxZ-5qH_GcI/AAAAAAAAT_I/WcSYSZq7Now/s320/IMG_4386.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3nB87ai8ijs/UxZ-53zDJ5I/AAAAAAAAT_M/DInjtOJ4AuA/s1600/IMG_4392.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-3nB87ai8ijs/UxZ-53zDJ5I/AAAAAAAAT_M/DInjtOJ4AuA/s320/IMG_4392.JPG" /></a>
After a little practice, each friend brought their poster to the front of the room and shared their learning! We were all quite surprised by many of the "fun facts", and life span of many of our animals!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mbMJXYDtYqk/UxZ_CO2gANI/AAAAAAAAT_c/Yb7WpBenaJ4/s1600/IMG_4394.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-mbMJXYDtYqk/UxZ_CO2gANI/AAAAAAAAT_c/Yb7WpBenaJ4/s320/IMG_4394.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--9YUYeIF6aA/UxZ_CU9iMtI/AAAAAAAAT_g/-JhcoS_u3Xk/s1600/IMG_4398.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--9YUYeIF6aA/UxZ_CU9iMtI/AAAAAAAAT_g/-JhcoS_u3Xk/s320/IMG_4398.JPG" /></a>
Awesome day friends! More research soon, but next time we will work in friends on a group project! Woohoo!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qARDNbM3r44/UxZ_5N1-UFI/AAAAAAAAT_s/nTTViXf6-3Q/s1600/IMG_4402.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-qARDNbM3r44/UxZ_5N1-UFI/AAAAAAAAT_s/nTTViXf6-3Q/s320/IMG_4402.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DiSWtmQViJk/UxZ_5tw2dRI/AAAAAAAAT_w/aaLk-fcd0ms/s1600/IMG_4403.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DiSWtmQViJk/UxZ_5tw2dRI/AAAAAAAAT_w/aaLk-fcd0ms/s320/IMG_4403.JPG" /></a>
This afternoon was pretty spectacular, and I am not exaggerating!! As we make our way through our catapult experiments, we must also remember to write about our thinking... like a scientist!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R3ai_fMd78Y/UxaACCeAEXI/AAAAAAAAT_8/lHDLKrINTzI/s1600/IMG_4407.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-R3ai_fMd78Y/UxaACCeAEXI/AAAAAAAAT_8/lHDLKrINTzI/s320/IMG_4407.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WAHmvsW9q6A/UxaAHJGXBRI/AAAAAAAAUAE/LKBE_jBipMM/s1600/IMG_4408.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WAHmvsW9q6A/UxaAHJGXBRI/AAAAAAAAUAE/LKBE_jBipMM/s320/IMG_4408.JPG" /></a>
Much of today was spent testing our catapults and writing details about our procedure! We actually had two procedures to write too! How to build the actual catapult, and then how to launch the ping pong balls and cotton balls!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9hhhq-8DZ3c/UxaAXaUWpDI/AAAAAAAAUAM/KkLF_7Kbuwg/s1600/IMG_4409.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9hhhq-8DZ3c/UxaAXaUWpDI/AAAAAAAAUAM/KkLF_7Kbuwg/s320/IMG_4409.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dLqsk855g0Y/UxaAX1_SdFI/AAAAAAAAUAU/gezJ7QjOWOI/s1600/IMG_4412.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dLqsk855g0Y/UxaAX1_SdFI/AAAAAAAAUAU/gezJ7QjOWOI/s320/IMG_4412.JPG" /></a>
Using detail, labels, bullets and expert words helped the reader understand our process!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-13099YeLgRo/UxaAf_y1kwI/AAAAAAAAUAc/rIjaEQteWP8/s1600/IMG_4415.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-13099YeLgRo/UxaAf_y1kwI/AAAAAAAAUAc/rIjaEQteWP8/s320/IMG_4415.JPG" /></a>
Thanks to mentor author Robert today, for letting us take a close look at his lab report and inspire great scientific writing! More with catapults tomorrow!!!Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-26362232780807602842014-03-03T18:28:00.000-05:002014-03-03T18:28:57.954-05:00Willy Wonka Day and Lab Reports!!<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tMVtbriF1x4/UxULiUprH-I/AAAAAAAAT7Q/1bn-RMneZH4/s1600/IMG_4343.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tMVtbriF1x4/UxULiUprH-I/AAAAAAAAT7Q/1bn-RMneZH4/s320/IMG_4343.JPG" /></a>
What happens after a second grade class finishes reading one of the best Roald Dahl full of adventures about a chocolate factory, Oompaloompas, 4 naughty children and one sweet wonderful boy?
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5dLQLokrUoM/UxULOGqhdXI/AAAAAAAAT7I/7OBcUQ5LkuE/s1600/IMG_4330.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5dLQLokrUoM/UxULOGqhdXI/AAAAAAAAT7I/7OBcUQ5LkuE/s320/IMG_4330.JPG" /></a>
Why you get Willy Wonka Day... all day... in second grade! And it all started with our chocolate river in math!!
Oh, no... not that chocolate river, that's Ms. B.! Along with some other characters posing as teachers.... heh, heh!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vYCkbIQwfds/UxULuvwtHmI/AAAAAAAAT7Y/t6aErRLbZzw/s1600/IMG_4335.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-vYCkbIQwfds/UxULuvwtHmI/AAAAAAAAT7Y/t6aErRLbZzw/s320/IMG_4335.JPG" /></a>
Our chocolate river was full of all different kinds of chocolate data that we needed to sort, classify, and transfer onto our chocolate river bar graphs.
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cL-PKk2H2VQ/UxULy6lZcWI/AAAAAAAAT7g/zohbR0UUTB8/s1600/IMG_4336.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cL-PKk2H2VQ/UxULy6lZcWI/AAAAAAAAT7g/zohbR0UUTB8/s320/IMG_4336.JPG" /></a>
We paid close attention to making our graphs neat, then used the data on the graph to answer some sweet, chocolatey questions!! When math starts in a chocolate river, you know it's going to be interesting!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jiZ1tPBFQmA/UxUL7yEGZRI/AAAAAAAAT7s/QDOwVeMRve4/s1600/IMG_4337.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jiZ1tPBFQmA/UxUL7yEGZRI/AAAAAAAAT7s/QDOwVeMRve4/s320/IMG_4337.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iwbR7dktLEo/UxUL7zHBJZI/AAAAAAAAT7o/8sO4tA9W_Uk/s1600/IMG_4338.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iwbR7dktLEo/UxUL7zHBJZI/AAAAAAAAT7o/8sO4tA9W_Uk/s320/IMG_4338.JPG" /></a>
Our next adventure was the quest for our own golden tickets! That journey started with a scavenger hunt full of clues... leading to more clues... leading to yet more clues, which lead us to Nurse Jeannie and our Wonka bars!!
</a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sDvkTENQufo/UxUMLdawrzI/AAAAAAAAT8A/UqdkMN1wcbQ/s1600/IMG_4344.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sDvkTENQufo/UxUMLdawrzI/AAAAAAAAT8A/UqdkMN1wcbQ/s320/IMG_4344.JPG" /></a>
Each, completed with a golden ticket for every second grader! Wow!! After that adventure, it was time for Grandpa Joe's math meeting!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ft9cKMxGUO4/UxUMlKJ5JPI/AAAAAAAAT8Y/MkzSwru-WA0/s1600/IMG_4333.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ft9cKMxGUO4/UxUMlKJ5JPI/AAAAAAAAT8Y/MkzSwru-WA0/s320/IMG_4333.JPG" /></a>
Well done Grandpa Joe... AKA Ben! Finally, it was time for every character's close up!! First up, all our Charlie Bucket's... the hero in our story!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PkmlY59suo8/UxUMwwwYq0I/AAAAAAAAT8g/FdcA0FsXeso/s1600/IMG_4345.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PkmlY59suo8/UxUMwwwYq0I/AAAAAAAAT8g/FdcA0FsXeso/s320/IMG_4345.JPG" /></a>
Next up, our one and only Veruca Salt, who I'm glad to say, is NOTHING like our sweet lovely Stephanie!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zlNZcZoVMqQ/UxUOjpPJyWI/AAAAAAAAT8s/5AtAi4PiB_0/s1600/IMG_4346.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zlNZcZoVMqQ/UxUOjpPJyWI/AAAAAAAAT8s/5AtAi4PiB_0/s320/IMG_4346.JPG" /></a>
Then it was time for our gum chewing Violets!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HRZD5zHBAAI/UxUOpdPH5YI/AAAAAAAAT80/OUJ8Qqf7S0s/s1600/IMG_4347.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-HRZD5zHBAAI/UxUOpdPH5YI/AAAAAAAAT80/OUJ8Qqf7S0s/s320/IMG_4347.JPG" /></a>
We also had a number of Mike TVs today... along with Grandpa Joe!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cK5G9sBgnjQ/UxUOzDianvI/AAAAAAAAT88/a0y-x_WeMYc/s1600/IMG_4356.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cK5G9sBgnjQ/UxUOzDianvI/AAAAAAAAT88/a0y-x_WeMYc/s320/IMG_4356.JPG" /></a>
Finally, to round out our character profiles, we had the magnificent Mr. Willy Wonka!! And, let's not forget about our orange skinned, green haired friend, the hard working Ommpaloompa!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dvIh3lxiyUE/UxUO8hZz7YI/AAAAAAAAT9E/h5YzAST_Yek/s1600/IMG_4350.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dvIh3lxiyUE/UxUO8hZz7YI/AAAAAAAAT9E/h5YzAST_Yek/s320/IMG_4350.JPG" /></a>
Willy Wonka Day isn't just for kids, the teachers got into character too! Golden tickets, Wonka bars and chocolate rivers round out the group today!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AD2xddQEubw/UxUPKuDTXLI/AAAAAAAAT9M/JWKKh4KLgCI/s1600/IMG_4332.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AD2xddQEubw/UxUPKuDTXLI/AAAAAAAAT9M/JWKKh4KLgCI/s320/IMG_4332.JPG" /></a>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2XesG6PVnGM/UxUPUO_H7TI/AAAAAAAAT9U/hKxXNtX4h7M/s1600/IMG_4355.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2XesG6PVnGM/UxUPUO_H7TI/AAAAAAAAT9U/hKxXNtX4h7M/s320/IMG_4355.JPG" /></a>
Last, this afternoon, it was all about nonfiction writing and new lab reports! Our new question and procedure will begin with catapults!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yTqFaw7xHnA/UxUPjauG9lI/AAAAAAAAT9k/HyRwwDggGyU/s1600/IMG_4363.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-yTqFaw7xHnA/UxUPjauG9lI/AAAAAAAAT9k/HyRwwDggGyU/s320/IMG_4363.JPG" /></a>
That's right, today our task was to create a question that we would test using the scientific writing process... starting with building our very own catapults!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eExdvevwfFY/UxUPo5d9G0I/AAAAAAAAT9s/OOXOHcWDeFA/s1600/IMG_4361.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eExdvevwfFY/UxUPo5d9G0I/AAAAAAAAT9s/OOXOHcWDeFA/s320/IMG_4361.JPG" /></a>
And we're just getting started! More with catapults and "procedure writing" tomorrow! Wonka Day... HUGE success! Well done second grade!!

In math we're learning all about time, how to tell time to 5 minutes, and parts of the clock! We also learned what am and pm mean when talking about time too!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0Dwx3p76CeM/Uvqy9ljcB4I/AAAAAAAAT0Q/iq3hCHmmuV0/s1600/IMG_4023.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0Dwx3p76CeM/Uvqy9ljcB4I/AAAAAAAAT0Q/iq3hCHmmuV0/s320/IMG_4023.JPG" /></a>
Kelsey lead a great math meeting and brought us up to and over 100 days in school! Wow! Tenzin also lead a morning meeting with This Land Is Your Land, and the drum greeting!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9f5yhakpFCk/UvqzEImIxvI/AAAAAAAAT0Y/EpWpyFklJIY/s1600/IMG_4027.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9f5yhakpFCk/UvqzEImIxvI/AAAAAAAAT0Y/EpWpyFklJIY/s320/IMG_4027.JPG" /></a>
In reading workshop we are stretching our learning about nonfiction and text features and focusing on what the author is trying to teach us! Taking a close look at what the author did, and how it helps us learn, while paying close attention to the "main idea" of nonfiction text... and supporting details! And we are loving it!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CoS_kuzF1pE/UvqzMxfsniI/AAAAAAAAT0g/poyuTCwwnmM/s1600/IMG_4032.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CoS_kuzF1pE/UvqzMxfsniI/AAAAAAAAT0g/poyuTCwwnmM/s320/IMG_4032.JPG" /></a>
Soon we'll celebrate our own nonfiction research writing and become the author ourselves! Writing to teach... writing nonfiction like an expert! Exciting! In writing workshop we are also writing nonfiction courtesy of lab reports!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yPDUUbMluww/UvqzaX68-wI/AAAAAAAAT0o/uyvSpXsgYS4/s1600/IMG_4033.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yPDUUbMluww/UvqzaX68-wI/AAAAAAAAT0o/uyvSpXsgYS4/s320/IMG_4033.JPG" /></a>
Paying attention (like a scientist) to our "question", our "hypothesis", and next, our "procedure", followed by our "results" and ending with writing about our "conclusion" (what we think about what we observed)!! Wow! We've finished 2 lab reports after posing questions and writing about our trials! Next in writing workshop.... catapults!!! Now that sounds exciting! Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-69531666908192788172014-02-03T18:58:00.000-05:002014-02-03T18:58:38.129-05:00Time!<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZWpjHciuj0/UvAsaK5XRSI/AAAAAAAATxg/6XwsVJahKKE/s1600/IMG_3934.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4ZWpjHciuj0/UvAsaK5XRSI/AAAAAAAATxg/6XwsVJahKKE/s320/IMG_3934.JPG" /></a>
Happy Monday Friends! A busy fun day in 2W as we reviewed telling time to 5 minutes! Remembering parts of the clock, and where the hands go, and what they are telling us is like learning a new language!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RhxrEmv7N8w/UvAshJFX63I/AAAAAAAATxo/YzjWjJoSf48/s1600/IMG_3935.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-RhxrEmv7N8w/UvAshJFX63I/AAAAAAAATxo/YzjWjJoSf48/s320/IMG_3935.JPG" /></a>
Ms. Carey taught today's lesson and we quickly broke off into small groups for practice! Well done friends!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9H0-EhtkRzA/UvAtIm3nYJI/AAAAAAAATyA/nkmNd6VlMFI/s1600/IMG_3936.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9H0-EhtkRzA/UvAtIm3nYJI/AAAAAAAATyA/nkmNd6VlMFI/s320/IMG_3936.JPG" /></a>
In reading we read and learned all about gorillas and how they live! One of our most interesting and favorite nonfiction books yet! Everyone loved it! Probably THE MOST exciting thing that happened today was the unexpected news that our smart board was being installed.... TODAY! WOW! We couldn't be more excited, so we camped out in the cafeteria with some spectacular math games (Heads and Tails and I Have, Who Has?)!! Great way to end the day, and I can't wait to see our smart board tomorrow morning!!!Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-69637841977516910552014-02-02T18:27:00.000-05:002014-02-02T18:27:11.308-05:00Busy Week!! Take a Peek!!<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DVVYDST-p0o/Uu7TvA7hneI/AAAAAAAATvY/MuT8jyzotpI/s1600/IMG_3899.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DVVYDST-p0o/Uu7TvA7hneI/AAAAAAAATvY/MuT8jyzotpI/s320/IMG_3899.JPG" /></a>
We've been so busy in 2W learning all about money, and we've just started our new math unit on telling time! We will learn about parts of the clock and how they work, and how to read a clock!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkD3DZ_Lx18/Uu7SmElJNwI/AAAAAAAATuQ/0dTTK6Wq3bU/s1600/IMG_3895.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kkD3DZ_Lx18/Uu7SmElJNwI/AAAAAAAATuQ/0dTTK6Wq3bU/s320/IMG_3895.JPG" /></a>
We've started with some background knowledge (time to the hour, minute hand, hour hand) and will build on this as the unit progresses!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5mB7RP4J5rw/Uu7Sy-QdcQI/AAAAAAAATug/6e9Av7gR4Ao/s1600/IMG_3892.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-5mB7RP4J5rw/Uu7Sy-QdcQI/AAAAAAAATug/6e9Av7gR4Ao/s320/IMG_3892.JPG" /></a>
Ms. Carey will begin taking on more large group, direct teaching duties in her second semester, and she started today with a great lesson on telling time on an analog clock.
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iQj5uk3N-NA/Uu7S-QiI9HI/AAAAAAAATus/mD9ffbG8ET0/s1600/IMG_3896.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iQj5uk3N-NA/Uu7S-QiI9HI/AAAAAAAATus/mD9ffbG8ET0/s320/IMG_3896.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mLBayUJ_DII/Uu7S-Kmsc6I/AAAAAAAATuo/jxDDQCutWdk/s1600/IMG_3897.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mLBayUJ_DII/Uu7S-Kmsc6I/AAAAAAAATuo/jxDDQCutWdk/s320/IMG_3897.JPG" /></a>
We reviewed parts of the clock, and learned how minutes on the clock are like counting by 5's!! Then we practiced in small groups! In reading we are stretching our learning about nonfiction text and text features, and have learned how to go back into the book and "prove" our thinking!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PWFZAGzpf2Q/Uu7UKEivmSI/AAAAAAAATvg/KJkbWlbUX_0/s1600/IMG_3900.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-PWFZAGzpf2Q/Uu7UKEivmSI/AAAAAAAATvg/KJkbWlbUX_0/s320/IMG_3900.JPG" /></a>
Well done! It was Tenzin's V.I.P. and we sure learned more about this very special student!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UqpiXiFM8Gw/Uu7TRfGYtdI/AAAAAAAATvA/_oBgQQHq5VA/s1600/IMG_3904.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UqpiXiFM8Gw/Uu7TRfGYtdI/AAAAAAAATvA/_oBgQQHq5VA/s320/IMG_3904.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A6PjhmFsRtM/Uu7TRdMiqEI/AAAAAAAATvE/AmQXm8_7yCM/s1600/IMG_3905.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A6PjhmFsRtM/Uu7TRdMiqEI/AAAAAAAATvE/AmQXm8_7yCM/s320/IMG_3905.JPG" /></a>
Friday ended with another second grade sing, and today, we paid tribute to singer songwriter Pete Seeger with many of his incredible songs about freedom and justice!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-36m4voLXGJk/Uu7TmT-4-0I/AAAAAAAATvQ/a9nwV2JEXzA/s1600/IMG_3909.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-36m4voLXGJk/Uu7TmT-4-0I/AAAAAAAATvQ/a9nwV2JEXzA/s320/IMG_3909.JPG" /></a>
Great Friday friends!! Rest up this weekend and we'll have another great week of learning coming up! Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-15353669048037299172014-01-21T19:32:00.000-05:002014-01-21T19:33:06.504-05:00Counting Money and Conclusions!!!Welcome back after a long weekend in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.!!!! Now that we're back, it was time to get back to work, and that meant starting with Jenaily's math meeting!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p0Twu67uS0A/Ut8QUJBGm-I/AAAAAAAATlw/M_M0oeKaFYY/s1600/IMG_3737.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-p0Twu67uS0A/Ut8QUJBGm-I/AAAAAAAATlw/M_M0oeKaFYY/s320/IMG_3737.JPG" /></a>
Well done Jenaily! We reviewed some of the skills we learned in our money unit, and it was time to put these skills to good use!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YtIPAQ-0EHI/Ut8Qeka9PXI/AAAAAAAATl4/fs8nt6GhWsI/s1600/IMG_3739.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YtIPAQ-0EHI/Ut8Qeka9PXI/AAAAAAAATl4/fs8nt6GhWsI/s320/IMG_3739.JPG" /></a>
We played one of our favorite money counting games.... Heads and Tails! After dumping, sorting, and organizing our coins, it was time to count!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b7WHkC_Xst8/Ut8QlrjXeDI/AAAAAAAATmA/SVF3Dc4yBXo/s1600/IMG_3740.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-b7WHkC_Xst8/Ut8QlrjXeDI/AAAAAAAATmA/SVF3Dc4yBXo/s320/IMG_3740.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JvQGtIeJ2B4/Ut8QmYYtAsI/AAAAAAAATmE/Cqdi1UDdKWQ/s1600/IMG_3743.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JvQGtIeJ2B4/Ut8QmYYtAsI/AAAAAAAATmE/Cqdi1UDdKWQ/s320/IMG_3743.JPG" /></a>
Great skills practice before we begin some post-unit assessment. Well done friends, and fun too! In reading workshop we continued our reading and learning about nonfiction with another super interesting book.... "Extreme Insects"!!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PyjY8Y3X_60/Ut8QzyKOpRI/AAAAAAAATmQ/JtMv4xrK-nc/s1600/IMG_3749.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PyjY8Y3X_60/Ut8QzyKOpRI/AAAAAAAATmQ/JtMv4xrK-nc/s320/IMG_3749.JPG" /></a>
Very cool! We paid close attention to text features, and how they help deepen our understanding of a topic!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IHgpWdUJMqs/Ut8Q8SngFFI/AAAAAAAATmc/kba93mh7bTY/s1600/IMG_3753.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IHgpWdUJMqs/Ut8Q8SngFFI/AAAAAAAATmc/kba93mh7bTY/s320/IMG_3753.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bgpcAbXqu60/Ut8Q8NQl7PI/AAAAAAAATmY/yui3hMbLpuo/s1600/IMG_3755.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bgpcAbXqu60/Ut8Q8NQl7PI/AAAAAAAATmY/yui3hMbLpuo/s320/IMG_3755.JPG" /></a>
In writing workshop, we crafted conclusions in our lab reports from last week! We had to think about our "question" and remember our "results" while we summarized what actually happened in our "trials"!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AVTBBala_ww/Ut8RCX2xqeI/AAAAAAAATmo/QN4BcxrpuH0/s1600/IMG_3754.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AVTBBala_ww/Ut8RCX2xqeI/AAAAAAAATmo/QN4BcxrpuH0/s320/IMG_3754.JPG" /></a>
After some thoughtful reflection, we wrote about what happened, but also about what we WONDER....how we could take our thinking and reflection further!! I feel another scientific investigation in our very near future!!! Well done scientist, and nice job on our very first lab reports! So much more to come.... and I can't wait!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8KXJizK9r0w/Ut8RIyM6YjI/AAAAAAAATmw/33vIZJ7pLGY/s1600/IMG_3756.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8KXJizK9r0w/Ut8RIyM6YjI/AAAAAAAATmw/33vIZJ7pLGY/s320/IMG_3756.JPG" /></a>Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-55435949181846121452014-01-17T10:00:00.000-05:002014-01-17T10:00:04.665-05:00Lab Reports and Sukhmann's Meetings!If your name is Sukhmann... then you were extremely busy today in 2W!!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PABo7rew_xY/UtlCL10R8OI/AAAAAAAATj0/SYK4LcD4I-8/s1600/IMG_3682.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PABo7rew_xY/UtlCL10R8OI/AAAAAAAATj0/SYK4LcD4I-8/s320/IMG_3682.JPG" /></a>
Not only did Sukhmann start our day as the math meeting helper, counting money, calendar math, and counting days in school, but he was also our V.I.P!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_w7OBw0rdbg/UtlCSeMYuTI/AAAAAAAATj8/mLnhbHpPxps/s1600/IMG_3689.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_w7OBw0rdbg/UtlCSeMYuTI/AAAAAAAATj8/mLnhbHpPxps/s320/IMG_3689.JPG" /></a>
We learned even more about this extremely cool Dude, his family, friends, and what he misses in India! Next it was on to problem solving using the skills we learned counting money!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hvSUAgyS4Cg/UtlCYFkTxCI/AAAAAAAATkE/3EEJ91_LwWk/s1600/IMG_3686.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hvSUAgyS4Cg/UtlCYFkTxCI/AAAAAAAATkE/3EEJ91_LwWk/s320/IMG_3686.JPG" /></a>
Using language and understanding how to read and solve a problem, and determining what kind of skills we need to access to get the answer kept us very busy! We also had to show ALL OUR THINKING... using strategies like pictures, diagrams, labels, numbers and words!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HHhvEqYHYRg/UtlCfC6pivI/AAAAAAAATkM/pTuSJkYgcLY/s1600/IMG_3687.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HHhvEqYHYRg/UtlCfC6pivI/AAAAAAAATkM/pTuSJkYgcLY/s320/IMG_3687.JPG" /></a>
Well done problem solvers! As I said, Suk was very busy today, because right after math he was today's morning meeting helper and picked our greeting, game, and wrote his very own morning message!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KO9Jw_dmVZQ/UtlCrDPo3LI/AAAAAAAATkU/F6BQpiZbjZ8/s1600/IMG_3692.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KO9Jw_dmVZQ/UtlCrDPo3LI/AAAAAAAATkU/F6BQpiZbjZ8/s320/IMG_3692.JPG" /></a>
Well done Suk!! Next in reading workshop we continued with our nonfiction unit and read about our hero Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and all about his work in the Civil Rights Movement.
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Gy_aRRnv0nQ/UtlCv9QGWEI/AAAAAAAATkc/2Z22sfZ_Vbc/s1600/IMG_3694.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Gy_aRRnv0nQ/UtlCv9QGWEI/AAAAAAAATkc/2Z22sfZ_Vbc/s320/IMG_3694.JPG" /></a>
As Kelsey said, it is a sad story anytime you talk about Dr. King because of how his life and work ended so abruptly and far too soon! Well said Kelsey, very thoughtful reflection.
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ch1KLX0WxyE/UtlC1hxcldI/AAAAAAAATkk/yFyLLY7DtCw/s1600/IMG_3696.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ch1KLX0WxyE/UtlC1hxcldI/AAAAAAAATkk/yFyLLY7DtCw/s320/IMG_3696.JPG" /></a>
We also wrote about our reading paying close attention to text features. Not only what they are and why they're important, but how they can help us understand a topic better!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5yDEbh1IXf8/UtlDxtK6QEI/AAAAAAAATkw/bVHfcdPebrQ/s1600/IMG_3697.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5yDEbh1IXf8/UtlDxtK6QEI/AAAAAAAATkw/bVHfcdPebrQ/s320/IMG_3697.JPG" /></a>
In writing workshop we are learning all about scientific writing with experiments and lab reports. Today we took our question and hypothesis and put put our procedure to work!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VTZj4nZvWgo/UtlD9AnPcNI/AAAAAAAATk4/8ANYXdV4Ftw/s1600/IMG_3700.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VTZj4nZvWgo/UtlD9AnPcNI/AAAAAAAATk4/8ANYXdV4Ftw/s320/IMG_3700.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iRqQqW8Ut9A/UtlD9oY1gGI/AAAAAAAATk8/dsQcAWJMaKE/s1600/IMG_3702.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iRqQqW8Ut9A/UtlD9oY1gGI/AAAAAAAATk8/dsQcAWJMaKE/s320/IMG_3702.JPG" /></a>
This meant measuring how far our car traveled on the rug, and how far the car traveled on the floor! We paid close attention to detail and made sure to perform each trial exactly the same!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2AMDbS93T1o/UtlEbhWSWTI/AAAAAAAATlI/72fs-eSqtJo/s1600/IMG_3713.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2AMDbS93T1o/UtlEbhWSWTI/AAAAAAAATlI/72fs-eSqtJo/s320/IMG_3713.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Elq2jiZK7jw/UtlEezEBgoI/AAAAAAAATlQ/XkXOHS989tE/s1600/IMG_3699.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Elq2jiZK7jw/UtlEezEBgoI/AAAAAAAATlQ/XkXOHS989tE/s320/IMG_3699.JPG" /></a>
Measuring with precision, we learned that our hypothesis was correct. The friction on the carpet was thought to slow down how far the car traveled, and the smooth surface on the floor made the car travel farther!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FIznr1D8_w0/UtlEl1UPwmI/AAAAAAAATlY/Ucyxa0OBM0E/s1600/IMG_3715.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FIznr1D8_w0/UtlEl1UPwmI/AAAAAAAATlY/Ucyxa0OBM0E/s320/IMG_3715.JPG" /></a>
Well done scientists! We love this new unit and can't wait to pose more questions and write about our learning using lab reports!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ajK3pqcCpLc/UtlEv-H7_LI/AAAAAAAATlg/YRTbRI_2_xQ/s1600/IMG_3693.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ajK3pqcCpLc/UtlEv-H7_LI/AAAAAAAATlg/YRTbRI_2_xQ/s320/IMG_3693.JPG" /></a>

Serious Business!Greetings friends! There is so much going on in 2W this week, so, here we GO!! Many meetings have been conducted with precision and efficiency! Sukhmann has run some very productive math meetings, and Giorgia's morning meeting was great!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rk9FV0CLd6s/UtcdaFK441I/AAAAAAAAThI/KlOLwAViPkQ/s1600/IMG_3653.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rk9FV0CLd6s/UtcdaFK441I/AAAAAAAAThI/KlOLwAViPkQ/s320/IMG_3653.JPG" /></a>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eIDzrb-YCpw/UtcdkalHwJI/AAAAAAAAThQ/wPTNl-gfztQ/s1600/IMG_3679.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-eIDzrb-YCpw/UtcdkalHwJI/AAAAAAAAThQ/wPTNl-gfztQ/s320/IMG_3679.JPG" /></a>
She certainly didn't need my help, and had the whole kit-and-kaboodle under control! Right down to composing her very own morning message... with survey question... complete with venn diagram!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VXJ3fMCqb7o/UtcdqpE1VaI/AAAAAAAAThY/uP8KQDc8GF4/s1600/IMG_3676.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VXJ3fMCqb7o/UtcdqpE1VaI/AAAAAAAAThY/uP8KQDc8GF4/s320/IMG_3676.JPG" /></a>
Way to ROCK the morning meeting Giorgia, and thanks to every other second grade participant! Well done! In math we've continued learning about money!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c2f8VnRl1nU/Utcd5oOXQ3I/AAAAAAAAThw/7Qxi5pC4YEI/s1600/IMG_3634.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-c2f8VnRl1nU/Utcd5oOXQ3I/AAAAAAAAThw/7Qxi5pC4YEI/s320/IMG_3634.JPG" /></a>
Counting money, writing money, coin equivalents, comparing money, and games with money! Words like: worth, value, decimal, dollar sign, amount, order, and of course the names of all the coins, are very important words to know!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BU3PNeLgi3M/Utcd-BXdu-I/AAAAAAAATh4/H0nrv4UAcgA/s1600/IMG_3635.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BU3PNeLgi3M/Utcd-BXdu-I/AAAAAAAATh4/H0nrv4UAcgA/s320/IMG_3635.JPG" /></a>
All our learning about how money works will prepare us for the goal of all this learning... problem solving with money!! More with money next week!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BjrRPiDPGOY/UtceFHvkIaI/AAAAAAAATiA/FDqeBttFMx8/s1600/IMG_3636.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BjrRPiDPGOY/UtceFHvkIaI/AAAAAAAATiA/FDqeBttFMx8/s320/IMG_3636.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yiOwHHAeqQk/UtceFdX6DiI/AAAAAAAATiE/71TKkFt5gG0/s1600/IMG_3640.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-yiOwHHAeqQk/UtceFdX6DiI/AAAAAAAATiE/71TKkFt5gG0/s320/IMG_3640.JPG" /></a>
In reading workshop we've worked with nonfiction and informational text, paying close attention to text features! Learning how text features can increase our understanding of a subject, and how to use text features to help us with our learning are all important goals in reading workshop.
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X-UsouaRhmY/UtceVZKmYXI/AAAAAAAATiQ/ZzQjECO9L_I/s1600/IMG_3661.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-X-UsouaRhmY/UtceVZKmYXI/AAAAAAAATiQ/ZzQjECO9L_I/s320/IMG_3661.JPG" /></a>
Using anchor charts and organizers help us with our learning and thinking!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8SU5EpDmAWQ/UtcebVVM8oI/AAAAAAAATiY/tGuxLoCmGNE/s1600/IMG_3642.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-8SU5EpDmAWQ/UtcebVVM8oI/AAAAAAAATiY/tGuxLoCmGNE/s320/IMG_3642.JPG" /></a>
We're not only learning about a lot of interesting subjects in science, sports, social studies, history, animals, and habitats, but we're also learning what's important about writing nonfiction and why authors include things like text boxes, charts, graphs, maps, and headings in their writing!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jA-opDKju0M/UtceiOfTN9I/AAAAAAAATig/RgT7FvVDoFY/s1600/IMG_3643.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jA-opDKju0M/UtceiOfTN9I/AAAAAAAATig/RgT7FvVDoFY/s320/IMG_3643.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UWnE_oR68Ic/Utceiv0WaVI/AAAAAAAATik/OZsPEDqmRnI/s1600/IMG_3645.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UWnE_oR68Ic/Utceiv0WaVI/AAAAAAAATik/OZsPEDqmRnI/s320/IMG_3645.JPG" /></a>
And, speaking of writing... nonfiction has also taken over writing workshop! Learning how to write lab reports and about the scientific process (and thinking, wondering like a scientist) is what our new unit is all about!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MAZs-xdJFHs/UtceuuRjxEI/AAAAAAAATi0/-ckImWF5B18/s1600/IMG_3668.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MAZs-xdJFHs/UtceuuRjxEI/AAAAAAAATi0/-ckImWF5B18/s320/IMG_3668.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4XEKvNob2ew/UtceufGFlQI/AAAAAAAATiw/DgGI4Tmz6dg/s1600/IMG_3669.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4XEKvNob2ew/UtceufGFlQI/AAAAAAAATiw/DgGI4Tmz6dg/s320/IMG_3669.JPG" /></a>
Needless to say, we are all very excited about blending science and writing workshop into one learning extravaganza!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fha7cYBQpqY/Utce65rnSnI/AAAAAAAATjE/EGT2iH8X9tI/s1600/IMG_3671.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Fha7cYBQpqY/Utce65rnSnI/AAAAAAAATjE/EGT2iH8X9tI/s320/IMG_3671.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e6hbQN7bylE/Utce6gi1MSI/AAAAAAAATjA/EWzVsXbPvqU/s1600/IMG_3673.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e6hbQN7bylE/Utce6gi1MSI/AAAAAAAATjA/EWzVsXbPvqU/s320/IMG_3673.JPG" /></a>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aiFUGU-7zsQ/UtcfD-sOggI/AAAAAAAATjQ/wYl6_IjWNxQ/s1600/IMG_3670.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-aiFUGU-7zsQ/UtcfD-sOggI/AAAAAAAATjQ/wYl6_IjWNxQ/s320/IMG_3670.JPG" /></a>
Can't wait for experiments.... and writing all about it... with lab reports! Very exciting! We also had our winter concert with strings, band, recorders, and our very own chorus today! WOW!! What a treat! How great it is to have INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC back in our school!! Well done musicians! And what a great 2nd grade audience we were too! Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-15014083093676870532014-01-12T19:38:00.001-05:002014-01-12T19:38:23.381-05:00Nonfiction/Informational.... Reading and Writing!!Sooo, after days, and days, and days of forgetting to bring in the magazines. You know, the food magazines that I've contributed to... in the true spirit of informational writing. After all of the "forgetting", my students finally let me "have it"!!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oZMNNgZoW_U/UtM1N9Og6zI/AAAAAAAATgo/TyN8p-FIpro/s1600/IMG_3605.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-oZMNNgZoW_U/UtM1N9Og6zI/AAAAAAAATgo/TyN8p-FIpro/s320/IMG_3605.JPG" /></a>
As in, reminders that are hard to miss! And, I must say, our introduction into nonfiction reading and writing has been met with a lot of success, enjoyment, and pleasure!!!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fTT3jy6avCI/UtM1ayj4rnI/AAAAAAAATg4/7IWtbesQjpA/s1600/IMG_3625.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fTT3jy6avCI/UtM1ayj4rnI/AAAAAAAATg4/7IWtbesQjpA/s320/IMG_3625.JPG" /></a>
So, finally... looking forward to sharing my magazines with you all! More nonfiction reading and informational writing to come! Can't wait!!!! Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-51764465367004048762014-01-08T22:13:00.000-05:002014-01-08T22:13:50.614-05:00Great Wednesday Friends!! It started with another Riley math meeting, and it was awesome!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DuhRTZyj9Yc/Us4S5LrEzTI/AAAAAAAATfo/WrW7h_wHQng/s1600/IMG_3556.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DuhRTZyj9Yc/Us4S5LrEzTI/AAAAAAAATfo/WrW7h_wHQng/s320/IMG_3556.JPG" /></a>
Way to go Riley! We also had a quick tutorial on double digit addition.... not in depth, but a quick lesson on "starting with the top, and adding the ones column"... much more on adding double digit numbers (with a true, foundational appreciation for place value will happen later).
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hVRlglKUB7c/Us4TJTdHWYI/AAAAAAAATfw/lsz-Ap98oJU/s1600/IMG_3579.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hVRlglKUB7c/Us4TJTdHWYI/AAAAAAAATfw/lsz-Ap98oJU/s320/IMG_3579.JPG" /></a>
But, nothing bad happens when we learn some quick tricks in computation and adding numbers! We also continued our investigations using informational text (nonfiction) and read more books about animals, weather, the solar system, dinosaurs, snakes, and even cheer leading and soccer!!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pVDA2pIN1nI/Us4TSp9G3mI/AAAAAAAATf8/bz3trOk34SQ/s1600/IMG_3575.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pVDA2pIN1nI/Us4TSp9G3mI/AAAAAAAATf8/bz3trOk34SQ/s320/IMG_3575.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Xk8_7yh76nE/Us4TSScottI/AAAAAAAATf4/apU-eQXZLYw/s1600/IMG_3577.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Xk8_7yh76nE/Us4TSScottI/AAAAAAAATf4/apU-eQXZLYw/s320/IMG_3577.JPG" /></a>
We stretched our learning about information text into writing workshop, and learned about a new kind of writing! Information writing! We practiced thinking about something, a topic, that we know/care about. Next, we thought about writing about it... informational writing!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V91vQ4-CFzs/Us4TY8ocvMI/AAAAAAAATgI/In60i4BSrpo/s1600/IMG_3581.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V91vQ4-CFzs/Us4TY8ocvMI/AAAAAAAATgI/In60i4BSrpo/s320/IMG_3581.JPG" /></a>
Organizing informational writing, and using all the writing strategies we've learned is where we're headed in writing workshop.... and it's exciting!!!

Finally!!!!<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T3aG2_LR0iw/UstJIjKhGMI/AAAAAAAATb8/OYTP0L3w1-w/s1600/IMG_3507.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-T3aG2_LR0iw/UstJIjKhGMI/AAAAAAAATb8/OYTP0L3w1-w/s320/IMG_3507.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0OwmNfBQ6Lc/UstIzz9tP9I/AAAAAAAATbw/dhscOgWM9Lo/s1600/IMG_3537.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0OwmNfBQ6Lc/UstIzz9tP9I/AAAAAAAATbw/dhscOgWM9Lo/s320/IMG_3537.JPG" /></a>
Greetings and Happy New Year! It felt great to finally be back in the swing of second grade... 2W style! Weather has been reeking havoc on our schedules, but we were ready when school finally started today!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HHadEyDA344/UstJQzNARLI/AAAAAAAATcQ/k2Zr6krSfso/s1600/IMG_3508.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HHadEyDA344/UstJQzNARLI/AAAAAAAATcQ/k2Zr6krSfso/s320/IMG_3508.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uo-1LlX02fY/UstJQ6tw0tI/AAAAAAAATcM/R2n0CsublXY/s1600/IMG_3509.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uo-1LlX02fY/UstJQ6tw0tI/AAAAAAAATcM/R2n0CsublXY/s320/IMG_3509.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tERTX1hjVXQ/UstJRbIsdcI/AAAAAAAATcU/phsifCNiGNc/s1600/IMG_3510.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tERTX1hjVXQ/UstJRbIsdcI/AAAAAAAATcU/phsifCNiGNc/s320/IMG_3510.JPG" /></a>
First things first, we LOVED our new room! Students found their new desk spots and love our new learning communities!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eKtr5f-_Hhg/UstJbmwtW5I/AAAAAAAATck/rxrVByASsk8/s1600/IMG_3530.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eKtr5f-_Hhg/UstJbmwtW5I/AAAAAAAATck/rxrVByASsk8/s320/IMG_3530.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i-vBK6kweKA/UstJbzAXoeI/AAAAAAAATco/yEIY2-bvjH0/s1600/IMG_3536.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-i-vBK6kweKA/UstJbzAXoeI/AAAAAAAATco/yEIY2-bvjH0/s320/IMG_3536.JPG" /></a>
We also felt like the room looked... bigger, COOL! Not to mention, our water fountain works and the sink is less temperamental! Awesome!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xcbDzvpJWXw/UstJoc45k2I/AAAAAAAATc4/a3qc1ANr0os/s1600/IMG_3515.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xcbDzvpJWXw/UstJoc45k2I/AAAAAAAATc4/a3qc1ANr0os/s320/IMG_3515.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jjukz25_kWM/UstJoIVQF7I/AAAAAAAATc0/PC-Bxot1q98/s1600/IMG_3516.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jjukz25_kWM/UstJoIVQF7I/AAAAAAAATc0/PC-Bxot1q98/s320/IMG_3516.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wzU4lEO5YZI/UstJovExlNI/AAAAAAAATc8/_DKqDNGWhr4/s1600/IMG_3517.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-wzU4lEO5YZI/UstJovExlNI/AAAAAAAATc8/_DKqDNGWhr4/s320/IMG_3517.JPG" /></a>
Talk about a new beginning... we even loved our new reading workshop unit of study... Informational Text! With 2014, we welcome learning about text features and what informational text looks like and why we love it!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q3AryWPmxlM/UstJxEwVzJI/AAAAAAAATdM/maOgkOerlSM/s1600/IMG_3519.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q3AryWPmxlM/UstJxEwVzJI/AAAAAAAATdM/maOgkOerlSM/s320/IMG_3519.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cxIZmCGFy6E/UstJxfSTn4I/AAAAAAAATdQ/DnQ0oWZ398I/s1600/IMG_3522.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cxIZmCGFy6E/UstJxfSTn4I/AAAAAAAATdQ/DnQ0oWZ398I/s320/IMG_3522.JPG" /></a>
We will also begin a new writing unit focusing on informational writing (non-fiction, of course)! We loved investigating a variety of informational text, ranging from topics like weather disasters, important historical figures (and athletes), to gardening, and castles!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EgJWKE7bJY8/UstJ46W-eFI/AAAAAAAATdc/Zpe-hoV3vTY/s1600/IMG_3525.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EgJWKE7bJY8/UstJ46W-eFI/AAAAAAAATdc/Zpe-hoV3vTY/s320/IMG_3525.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qd3zVfvrgjY/UstJ5QPFU7I/AAAAAAAATdg/2vwiOY8JPAI/s1600/IMG_3528.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Qd3zVfvrgjY/UstJ5QPFU7I/AAAAAAAATdg/2vwiOY8JPAI/s320/IMG_3528.JPG" /></a>
The range of topics are endless, and we are all very excited about this new unit of study! Reading is an important way we learn, and we will pay close attention to how these books are crafted.
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gKyO0YMq6Ck/UstKBD5TbNI/AAAAAAAATds/TYZDkLjClIk/s1600/IMG_3524.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gKyO0YMq6Ck/UstKBD5TbNI/AAAAAAAATds/TYZDkLjClIk/s320/IMG_3524.JPG" /></a>
What's important to include and how does the author, writer decide what to include! I can't wait to jump into this new unit with this very enthusiastic group of second graders!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qn-pXc1iAoE/UstKJfvS7PI/AAAAAAAATd0/NNLl_N0kBLo/s1600/IMG_3523.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Qn-pXc1iAoE/UstKJfvS7PI/AAAAAAAATd0/NNLl_N0kBLo/s320/IMG_3523.JPG" /></a>
We missed math today, due to the delay, so we will review our learning about money tomorrow with a new game, and continue our money unit in math!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dSb2MhAschw/UstKQzrV3QI/AAAAAAAATd8/O4wqE2sBqmE/s1600/IMG_3532.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dSb2MhAschw/UstKQzrV3QI/AAAAAAAATd8/O4wqE2sBqmE/s320/IMG_3532.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P3CyL5dJqkU/UstKRcoMU8I/AAAAAAAATeA/kiMTKcdKYwo/s1600/IMG_3538.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-P3CyL5dJqkU/UstKRcoMU8I/AAAAAAAATeA/kiMTKcdKYwo/s320/IMG_3538.JPG" /></a>
What a great day friends... it sure felt good to see everyone and start our new year together! Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-17063710406682897882013-12-30T18:43:00.001-05:002014-01-02T09:21:51.616-05:00Sneak Peek!!<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WOjiGXHa0vI/UsIDttX7JnI/AAAAAAAATas/Yza3gmJFkFM/s1600/IMG_3411.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WOjiGXHa0vI/UsIDttX7JnI/AAAAAAAATas/Yza3gmJFkFM/s320/IMG_3411.JPG" /></a>
Wow! It's official... we have landed in our new room, and it's awesome! All the major furniture has been relocated and placed right where it belongs!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4GtnVWwww9c/UsID5uixjiI/AAAAAAAATa0/e69ET_ztDOw/s1600/IMG_3408.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4GtnVWwww9c/UsID5uixjiI/AAAAAAAATa0/e69ET_ztDOw/s320/IMG_3408.JPG" /></a>
Now, I don't know if David Grace is a magician, or a Rock Star, or all of the above... but our new room is fantastic! We're awaiting our new white board (with "smart" technology) for the front of the room, but other than that... we're good to GO!!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-m42I5rgQ9QI/UsIEA6wH8WI/AAAAAAAATa8/eUJvPiLkwHY/s1600/IMG_3409.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-m42I5rgQ9QI/UsIEA6wH8WI/AAAAAAAATa8/eUJvPiLkwHY/s320/IMG_3409.JPG" /></a>
I hope you like our new room as much as I do! It might take some getting used to, and we may inadvertently walk into Horizons the first few days... but we'll get used to it! Knowing this move serves the needs of all of our students at SES, and knowing that we have a school that prioritizes student need... and meets that need (with care and grace and thought and collaboration) is pretty spectacular!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HogVPENY0wI/UsIEGMCoHeI/AAAAAAAATbE/BLHzKhCEvj4/s1600/IMG_3410.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-HogVPENY0wI/UsIEGMCoHeI/AAAAAAAATbE/BLHzKhCEvj4/s320/IMG_3410.JPG" /></a>
Kudos to everyone who made this move go as smoothly as it has gone! Makes me proud (as if I wasn't already) to work where I do.... the best lil' country school that meets and exceeds the highest of standards... and has fun doing it! Working together, with a sense of community, cooperation, and purpose! Lots of learning... done right! Well done SES... WELL DONE!

More Celebrations!!<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fdLilgMyatc/UrInAITb5qI/AAAAAAAATTA/TO9PKTAjah0/s1600/IMG_3223.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fdLilgMyatc/UrInAITb5qI/AAAAAAAATTA/TO9PKTAjah0/s320/IMG_3223.JPG" /></a>
Another busy, wintery, beautiful day in second grade!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fQwAR26ZAMo/UrIp8qWGB6I/AAAAAAAATTM/EyHjBNw2gkQ/s1600/IMG_3226.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fQwAR26ZAMo/UrIp8qWGB6I/AAAAAAAATTM/EyHjBNw2gkQ/s320/IMG_3226.JPG" /></a>
We got started right away with our second day of writers reading their stories! Invited guests were treated to many personal narratives, all unique and all about a small moment in the lives of these second grade writers!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CIapmRwSPTQ/UrIqCoXD_rI/AAAAAAAATTU/fJ83TtT_tME/s1600/IMG_3227.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CIapmRwSPTQ/UrIqCoXD_rI/AAAAAAAATTU/fJ83TtT_tME/s320/IMG_3227.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tIKF2eTEllc/UrIqDAK3B8I/AAAAAAAATTY/JYxn-FT-98k/s1600/IMG_3229.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-tIKF2eTEllc/UrIqDAK3B8I/AAAAAAAATTY/JYxn-FT-98k/s320/IMG_3229.JPG" /></a>
Very personal indeed, and each story was full of craft moves and powerful language! Students worked extremely hard revising and editing their stories, and getting ready for today's celebration!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Vx07B9XVilg/UrIqLMmovoI/AAAAAAAATTk/jGjxzxo4jr0/s1600/IMG_3230.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Vx07B9XVilg/UrIqLMmovoI/AAAAAAAATTk/jGjxzxo4jr0/s320/IMG_3230.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pTiWgb3Pt0o/UrIqLkadm1I/AAAAAAAATTo/J1ladHK7XDk/s1600/IMG_3232.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pTiWgb3Pt0o/UrIqLkadm1I/AAAAAAAATTo/J1ladHK7XDk/s320/IMG_3232.JPG" /></a>
Well done 2W! Very proud moment for your teacher, as well as all our invited guests!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EQrqulJYLHc/UrIqZeVYNJI/AAAAAAAATT4/_Y8iN4zPmLU/s1600/IMG_3233.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-EQrqulJYLHc/UrIqZeVYNJI/AAAAAAAATT4/_Y8iN4zPmLU/s320/IMG_3233.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PEbzZygrav0/UrIqZEP8y_I/AAAAAAAATT0/qQsY1qmQfrM/s1600/IMG_3234.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PEbzZygrav0/UrIqZEP8y_I/AAAAAAAATT0/qQsY1qmQfrM/s320/IMG_3234.JPG" /></a>
We had a little time left this morning, so we decided to fill it with one of our favorite math games... I Have, Who Has? Using our skills in place value and greater than/less than, we compared numbers with cards and partners!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O199IkSB1kY/UrIqiiWz8lI/AAAAAAAATUE/l_XDLhhXjdY/s1600/IMG_3235.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O199IkSB1kY/UrIqiiWz8lI/AAAAAAAATUE/l_XDLhhXjdY/s320/IMG_3235.JPG" /></a>
Working together is a big part of playing math games, and cooperating with your partner really pays off! We always love having time to play math games, especially like this game!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RnwVlJLygGE/UrIqorxxlSI/AAAAAAAATUM/56mgb0Jtsxc/s1600/IMG_3237.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RnwVlJLygGE/UrIqorxxlSI/AAAAAAAATUM/56mgb0Jtsxc/s320/IMG_3237.JPG" /></a>
Hard but fun! Just the way we like it!

Snow day today! Enjoy! Join us tomorrow morning, instead, for our Writing Celebration! Everything we had planned for today will take place tomorrow morning at 8:45 (right after we take morning attendance and students check in)! If you planned on joining us this morning, we moved it all to Wednesday! See you then!Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-264657680831387882013-12-16T18:21:00.001-05:002013-12-16T18:23:57.959-05:00Author's Celebration!! <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ae-Ea-c0GBE/Uq-Jy7v4-pI/AAAAAAAATPI/xOyptWXq8Uc/s1600/IMG_3182.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ae-Ea-c0GBE/Uq-Jy7v4-pI/AAAAAAAATPI/xOyptWXq8Uc/s320/IMG_3182.JPG" /></a>
First we started with our math meeting, compliments of Robert and his calendar and place value skills!! Well done Robert! After that we learned more about money and added a new coin into our counting skills, the half dollar!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DrFJFCPEHdU/Uq-JpJzl1kI/AAAAAAAATPA/P72eHvyfCPw/s1600/IMG_3179.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DrFJFCPEHdU/Uq-JpJzl1kI/AAAAAAAATPA/P72eHvyfCPw/s320/IMG_3179.JPG" /></a>
Caroline's morning meeting quickly followed with a rousing rendition of Chicken Lips, and the sparkle game! Outstanding job Caroline! Then, it was really all about writing, authors, and celebrating our personal narrative stories!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TbHkpWGBs5A/Uq-KCC1v9iI/AAAAAAAATPQ/nzxdeZ1uF00/s1600/IMG_3184.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TbHkpWGBs5A/Uq-KCC1v9iI/AAAAAAAATPQ/nzxdeZ1uF00/s320/IMG_3184.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fcB7fcHCDa8/Uq-KC_gxqKI/AAAAAAAATPU/VIgdsZEOA7w/s1600/IMG_3185.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fcB7fcHCDa8/Uq-KC_gxqKI/AAAAAAAATPU/VIgdsZEOA7w/s320/IMG_3185.JPG" /></a>
Students worked relentlessly on their small moment stories, generating ideas, paying close attention to using mentor text (thanks to Jane Yolen, and our resident mentor authors, Ethan and Chan-Hee), and revising stories with lots of editing!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fB2XVFQBnC0/Uq-KLZS3lII/AAAAAAAATPo/SXqWoNPQw_4/s1600/IMG_3186.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fB2XVFQBnC0/Uq-KLZS3lII/AAAAAAAATPo/SXqWoNPQw_4/s320/IMG_3186.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GSDOR2VkjXc/Uq-KLPP6vRI/AAAAAAAATPk/Ccsra14Ai2M/s1600/IMG_3187.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GSDOR2VkjXc/Uq-KLPP6vRI/AAAAAAAATPk/Ccsra14Ai2M/s320/IMG_3187.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6IGgNzeka98/Uq-KKYhSCbI/AAAAAAAATPg/c6QgpF8A1a0/s1600/IMG_3188.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6IGgNzeka98/Uq-KKYhSCbI/AAAAAAAATPg/c6QgpF8A1a0/s320/IMG_3188.JPG" /></a>
A process that takes time, attention, stamina, perseverance, and a lot of effort! And, what a great day it was! Authors read their stories to guests like parents, principals, and each other!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-olKSto7vfxM/Uq-KRkN6iMI/AAAAAAAATP4/jouAICysO6o/s1600/IMG_3189.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-olKSto7vfxM/Uq-KRkN6iMI/AAAAAAAATP4/jouAICysO6o/s320/IMG_3189.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dl5Te1qWjBc/Uq-KR5UsWrI/AAAAAAAATP8/gf49u_RM448/s1600/IMG_3190.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-dl5Te1qWjBc/Uq-KR5UsWrI/AAAAAAAATP8/gf49u_RM448/s320/IMG_3190.JPG" /></a>
We were able to share and appreciate so many small moments, carefully written by all of our second grade authors! No two moments were quite the same, accept that all writers included skillful craft moves in elaborating on their stories!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zlj2-BYfHhc/Uq-KYRJjzHI/AAAAAAAATQI/AduPhrnL9z8/s1600/IMG_3192.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Zlj2-BYfHhc/Uq-KYRJjzHI/AAAAAAAATQI/AduPhrnL9z8/s320/IMG_3192.JPG" /></a>
Powerful language evoking strong emotion was also a common theme, as writers worked very hard on "hooking" their readers in the beginnings and leaving emotion and power in their endings! You know... the kind of story that leave an impression on the reader!
Needless to say, I could not be more proud of this writing community! So supportive of each other as writers, and producing some spectacular stories! We will repeat this author's celebration tomorrow... BECAUSE IT WAS THAT GOOD!!!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-skcQtqHx820/Uq-Kf2APfiI/AAAAAAAATQQ/2tgy522feGU/s1600/IMG_3183.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-skcQtqHx820/Uq-Kf2APfiI/AAAAAAAATQQ/2tgy522feGU/s320/IMG_3183.JPG" /></a>
And, anyone who missed it will have to come and listen to these amazing second grade writers and see for yourself! Don't miss it!Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-32756547223626494792013-12-12T19:34:00.002-05:002013-12-12T19:34:38.365-05:00Money and Meetings!!Happy Thursday Thinkers! Another busy day starting with Ethan's math meeting!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lXSoKIYCAAE/UqpTRWu62oI/AAAAAAAATM4/zIS1LkYSJXg/s1600/IMG_3088.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lXSoKIYCAAE/UqpTRWu62oI/AAAAAAAATM4/zIS1LkYSJXg/s320/IMG_3088.JPG" /></a>
We all couldn't help but notice that Ethan's super-power might just be running an effective, pragmatic, super efficient math meeting!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0H0tIkzAYE0/UqpTVoyY34I/AAAAAAAATNA/i5M3IOTMpZ4/s1600/IMG_3091.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0H0tIkzAYE0/UqpTVoyY34I/AAAAAAAATNA/i5M3IOTMpZ4/s320/IMG_3091.JPG" /></a>
Well done Ethan! In math we began our unit on money and started with a coin investigation!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B04WdAY-wZg/UqpTei6yOfI/AAAAAAAATNI/BgAXGil6VG0/s1600/IMG_3093.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-B04WdAY-wZg/UqpTei6yOfI/AAAAAAAATNI/BgAXGil6VG0/s320/IMG_3093.JPG" /></a>
Working with partners, we took a close look... and I mean, a real close look... at quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ABo2HroPCJc/UqpTpkxoaDI/AAAAAAAATNU/etcArERRCaI/s1600/IMG_3094.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ABo2HroPCJc/UqpTpkxoaDI/AAAAAAAATNU/etcArERRCaI/s320/IMG_3094.JPG" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DwsiYKh_8T4/UqpTpSzuLWI/AAAAAAAATNQ/6rLFItA8fqQ/s1600/IMG_3096.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DwsiYKh_8T4/UqpTpSzuLWI/AAAAAAAATNQ/6rLFItA8fqQ/s320/IMG_3096.JPG" /></a>
We payed close attention to what they are worth, their size, coin attributes, and tried to share everything we might know about coins.
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yg4PH_0qoBo/UqpTv_QKqfI/AAAAAAAATNg/nGI2llx5x-Q/s1600/IMG_3097.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yg4PH_0qoBo/UqpTv_QKqfI/AAAAAAAATNg/nGI2llx5x-Q/s320/IMG_3097.JPG" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1DMa0Q95LQE/UqpTv2wz3gI/AAAAAAAATNk/b1uH3F3ahro/s1600/IMG_3098.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1DMa0Q95LQE/UqpTv2wz3gI/AAAAAAAATNk/b1uH3F3ahro/s320/IMG_3098.JPG" /></a>
We recorded our observations (like scientists) and shared what we noticed! Well done friends! Kelsey also ran one spectacular math meeting, and decided to include reflections on our observations in math!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-y6gbUF5dK3Y/UqpT7G5803I/AAAAAAAATNw/-JMDVD6eWIM/s1600/IMG_3102.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-y6gbUF5dK3Y/UqpT7G5803I/AAAAAAAATNw/-JMDVD6eWIM/s320/IMG_3102.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mw0JQKjVEUQ/UqpT7PEcKJI/AAAAAAAATN0/9vWvPPRHQhI/s1600/IMG_3105.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Mw0JQKjVEUQ/UqpT7PEcKJI/AAAAAAAATN0/9vWvPPRHQhI/s320/IMG_3105.JPG" /></a>
She generated her very own morning message... all by herself! I quickly realized, after a nano-second, that Kelsey was running this meeting all on her own!! And that's just the way we like it!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-owRo4mmNzSo/UqpUAwClsFI/AAAAAAAATOA/YgEr80Z7JIA/s1600/IMG_3108.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-owRo4mmNzSo/UqpUAwClsFI/AAAAAAAATOA/YgEr80Z7JIA/s320/IMG_3108.JPG" /></a>
What a democratic, independent leader she was, choosing friends fairly, helping those that needed help, and keeping her meeting on task, and moving right along! Well done Kelsey!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jc5_E8NiY-E/UqpUHQ4JydI/AAAAAAAATOI/GfjCB3kfQKk/s1600/IMG_3111.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jc5_E8NiY-E/UqpUHQ4JydI/AAAAAAAATOI/GfjCB3kfQKk/s320/IMG_3111.JPG" /></a>
Ben decided to show off his holiday spirit as he bundled up for recess today, and we're glad he did, because he brought a smile to every face that saw him! Awesome Ben!

Our writing goals this week have been clear: illustrate, revise, edit our final copy, give our piece of writing a title and appealing cover, and complete our "all about the author" page!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vzZyh7a9haQ/UqpUouS0tmI/AAAAAAAATOo/xOthAvufeEI/s1600/IMG_3117.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vzZyh7a9haQ/UqpUouS0tmI/AAAAAAAATOo/xOthAvufeEI/s320/IMG_3117.JPG" /></a>
We're so close to the finish line with this writing unit, and we CAN'T WAIT to share our small moment stories with our audience on Monday and Tuesday!

Well done Ethan, what an expeditious and well run meeting that was! Soon after Ethan's meeting we were off to a special event courtesy of our PTO... the Manguito Latin Band!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-COUq3A3Bmfc/UqeZn_rVY9I/AAAAAAAATL4/KOX6-kfno2A/s1600/IMG_3076.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-COUq3A3Bmfc/UqeZn_rVY9I/AAAAAAAATL4/KOX6-kfno2A/s320/IMG_3076.JPG" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Eyo4y1fwYS8/UqeZiwwvtVI/AAAAAAAATLw/zD2ys0oD3js/s1600/IMG_3077.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Eyo4y1fwYS8/UqeZiwwvtVI/AAAAAAAATLw/zD2ys0oD3js/s320/IMG_3077.JPG" /></a>
EVERY morning should start like this! Wow! The cafe was lit up with the sounds of rhythmic percussion instruments, bells and singing... Latin style!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2HZfxvcVfDI/UqeZvx3qF9I/AAAAAAAATMA/4lS_stCNIWE/s1600/IMG_3081.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2HZfxvcVfDI/UqeZvx3qF9I/AAAAAAAATMA/4lS_stCNIWE/s320/IMG_3081.JPG" /></a>
It was spectacular! Watching the conga players pop out all those catchy rhythms made us want to dance! And we had our chance soon enough!!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-moXYpyh8ApM/UqeZ1Keme8I/AAAAAAAATMI/ZioYJEeiKHs/s1600/IMG_3082.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-moXYpyh8ApM/UqeZ1Keme8I/AAAAAAAATMI/ZioYJEeiKHs/s320/IMG_3082.JPG" /></a>
Everyone was up and moving and shaking their money makers! What a way to start a Tuesday! Thank you SES PTO, for supporting the arts and enriching our school experience with Manguito!

We LOVED it!! Later today we were back at work writing our final drafts and adding last minute touches to our personal narratives as we prepare for our first Author's Tea on Monday!!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DkFqjv4O-G8/UqeaDaIg1nI/AAAAAAAATMY/s6pAlQGMTAQ/s1600/IMG_3084.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DkFqjv4O-G8/UqeaDaIg1nI/AAAAAAAATMY/s6pAlQGMTAQ/s320/IMG_3084.JPG" /></a>
Students worked on their "All about the Author" pages, and copied over their stories in their best writing, paying close attention to punctuation and spelling!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2pkDXv2gTkw/UqeaIeNvK_I/AAAAAAAATMg/9iSoCMdKams/s1600/IMG_3086.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2pkDXv2gTkw/UqeaIeNvK_I/AAAAAAAATMg/9iSoCMdKams/s320/IMG_3086.JPG" /></a>
LOTS of work, and we tackled it with perseverance and stamina today!
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TfLMcQOrf9w/UqeaOkNKV9I/AAAAAAAATMo/TgeErA2Ya7k/s1600/IMG_3087.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TfLMcQOrf9w/UqeaOkNKV9I/AAAAAAAATMo/TgeErA2Ya7k/s320/IMG_3087.JPG" /></a>
Very impressive writers! Keep up the good work writers, and we'll be ready to blow the socks off our audience next week! Library tomorrow... remember your books please!Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7679130546926290274.post-67586264538282431272013-12-09T19:51:00.000-05:002013-12-09T19:51:36.216-05:00What's New in 2W?? Jack's V.I.P!!Greetings Friends and Families!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YV9cBs3R3ng/UqZjLysAp6I/AAAAAAAATJA/45dUZ89PZBA/s1600/IMG_3030.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YV9cBs3R3ng/UqZjLysAp6I/AAAAAAAATJA/45dUZ89PZBA/s320/IMG_3030.JPG" /></a>
2W has been a busy place lately, and we have a lot to share! First off... our V.I.P. Jack shared his V.I.P. moment with pictures of his family, memories of Estonia, and some great stories!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rt2wnHhgvxs/UqZjSNHZyyI/AAAAAAAATJI/Hzi1ByAOvb8/s1600/IMG_3032.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Rt2wnHhgvxs/UqZjSNHZyyI/AAAAAAAATJI/Hzi1ByAOvb8/s320/IMG_3032.JPG" /></a>
Well done Jack! We've also expanded our thinking in reading workshop to include many more elements of a story!
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jbhfw1GV98c/UqZjZK7mR7I/AAAAAAAATJQ/Xvy51UNb0qQ/s1600/IMG_3044.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Jbhfw1GV98c/UqZjZK7mR7I/AAAAAAAATJQ/Xvy51UNb0qQ/s320/IMG_3044.JPG" /></a>
Noticing the setting and time of a story, while paying close attention to the problem, and events leading to a solution in a story can deepen our understanding of events and "point of view"... in any story! Hard work!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HaeKdN7QUt4/UqZjg-Cxp6I/AAAAAAAATJY/uBzPDt-ibc0/s1600/IMG_3029.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HaeKdN7QUt4/UqZjg-Cxp6I/AAAAAAAATJY/uBzPDt-ibc0/s320/IMG_3029.JPG" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h9Pd8HdnRqY/UqZjg2yzJ7I/AAAAAAAATJc/5l4Ctrtxydw/s1600/IMG_3045.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-h9Pd8HdnRqY/UqZjg2yzJ7I/AAAAAAAATJc/5l4Ctrtxydw/s320/IMG_3045.JPG" /></a>
Today we practiced more thoughtful writing responses to our reading. In math we began a new unit on money... starting with coins and recognizing each coin's value. We even practiced counting some coins and reviewed how skip counting can help us count money! Much more to come with the start of our money unit!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EtW43EOhVIc/UqZjmgxKyRI/AAAAAAAATJo/efcnENGorsI/s1600/IMG_3046.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-EtW43EOhVIc/UqZjmgxKyRI/AAAAAAAATJo/efcnENGorsI/s320/IMG_3046.JPG" /></a>
In writing workshop we continued to revise and edit our personal narratives as we prepare for our first Author's Tea! A note went home today, explaining all the details, and we hope you're able to join this community of writers as we celebrate our small moment stories!! We also learned how to have a "prove-it" conference with another member of our writing community, and used writing from a new "mentor author", Chan-Hee!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MdR1eyZQj6A/UqZkYEXvkzI/AAAAAAAATJ0/KGvx_-dBQqM/s1600/IMG_3025.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MdR1eyZQj6A/UqZkYEXvkzI/AAAAAAAATJ0/KGvx_-dBQqM/s320/IMG_3025.JPG" /></a>
We also started Spanish last Friday... and it was awesome! We had to fit as much as we possibly could in this 30 minute lesson, but we loved every minute of it!
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ljHDzPOxtqk/UqZkjMfWrUI/AAAAAAAATJ8/TDBVjkWAl-A/s1600/IMG_3023.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ljHDzPOxtqk/UqZkjMfWrUI/AAAAAAAATJ8/TDBVjkWAl-A/s320/IMG_3023.JPG" /></a>
Can't wait for more, as we get introduced to this beautiful new language! Oh, and we finished one of our favorite read-alouds today... No Talking by Andrew Clement! We loved every minute of listening to this competition between girls and boys (and no talking) turn into a contest between kids and teachers!!
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-l3FjIDIl9Uk/UqZko9PcCcI/AAAAAAAATKE/uwr7dp3u-zc/s1600/IMG_3034.JPG" imageanchor="1" ><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-l3FjIDIl9Uk/UqZko9PcCcI/AAAAAAAATKE/uwr7dp3u-zc/s320/IMG_3034.JPG" /></a>
The "Unshushables" never sounded so quiet! thanks to Andrew Clement for this great piece of realistic fiction, and for acting as another mentor author, teaching and showing us how great writers include craft moves in their stories! Hope to see you at our first Author's Tea on Monday or Tuesday! Your choice... or come to both! Lee Worthleyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16517602113335572222noreply@blogger.com0
